Monsters Of The King - Colossus!

Colossus was a mighty monster so incredible that he got two, count e'm, two appearances in the pages of Tales of Suspense. Colossus began as a mighty statue built by a dissident artist against his will for the greater glory of the Communist state. But when an alien from outer space shows up and animates the giant stone creation, he becomes a threat to the very masters who ordered his construction.

A few months later the statue is sent to the United States and lo and behold the aliens show up again and once more the Colossus stomps through the streets, this time in Los Angeles. It took a Hollywood special effects artist to defeat the menace, but he did for the good of all.

During the Bronze Age of comics Marvel is casting around for new features and the relative success of a few issues of monster comics which reprinted these vintage Atlas tales convinced them to put the Colossus in the pages of Astonishing Tales just prior to Deathlok taking over the premises. But since the name "Colossus" had been taken by the X-Men, Colossus became "It". The feature by Tony Isabella and Dick Ayers was fun but brief.

Be back tomorrow for more Kirby monster goodness.

  1. Thank you Dojo Master! I loved this quirky little 4-issue Colossus strip sandwiched in-between Ka-Zar and Deathlok’s debut. Dick Ayers pulled off this off nicely I thought….Psyched for more Kirby Monster Goodness!

    1. Oh I got that wrong about when It appeared, it was between Ka-Zar and Deathlok, not after the latter. Thanks for the info, I'll correct the post.
