A Spooky Twist On A Strange Swipe!

The page from Doctor Strange #169 above is by Dan Adkins. This was my first issue of Doc, and it's a blowout extravaganza by Adkins. He had done a few of the final issues of the Strange Tales run and would do a few more issues of Doc before giving way to Gene Colan and Tom Palmer.

This page is pretty dynamic, but as it turns out it's a swipe of a Virgil Finlay piece. Here's a link which talks about that swipe in detail.

Well the other day I'm swimming through some blogs and I chance upon this ad for a vintage Spook Show.

The blog focused on gorillas so no attention was paid to other elements of the image. But something looked familiar and a little inspection revealed that the Finlay image had been swiped again. Here's the detail.

Now I don't know if the source was the Adkins swipe or the Finlay original, but given that only the Finlay figure is used, I'd guess the latter.

Rip Off

  2. Almost everything Dan Adkins drew was swiped. If a figure looks good in an Adkins strip, it's swiped. He was a great inker — one of the best in the business — but a terrible, terrible penciller. He died in 2013.
